State of the Nations: A Lakota Law Membership Event
On Wednesday, April 2, Lakota Law Director Chase Iron Eyes hosted State of the Nations: A Lakota Law Membership Circle Event. Including important presentations from two very special guests — Muwekma Ohlone Tribal Chairwoman, Charlene Nijmeh, and Vice President of the Nation of Hawaii, Brandon Maka’awa’awa — we took a deep dive on tribal sovereignty in the Trump era. We looked how solidarity between Indigenous nations and legal and activism-centered avenues can position all of us more strongly. It was an epic conversation, and we're so grateful to our presenters for their passion and insight.
Restoring Tradition Through Transition: A Lakota Law Membership Event
On Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST), Lakota Law Director Chase Iron Eyes hosted Restoring Tradition Through Transition: A Lakota Law Membership Circle Event. We discussed our transition to full Indigenous leadership under the Sacred Defense Fund, our takes on the state of Turtle Island following the U.S. election, and much more.
2024 Momentum: An All-Circles Event
On Wednesday, Feb. 28, Lakota Law Director Chase Iron Eyes hosted a panel of young people from across the Oceti Sakowin to hear about their lives, loves, and concerns growing up on the rez. Lakota Law's Tokata Iron Eyes and Dov Korff-Korn also joined to talk about current program priorities.
New Directions: A Membership Circle Event
On Thursday, August 24, Lakota Law co-director Chase Iron Eyes hosted a panel of Lakota Law staff including his daughter, spokesperson Tokata Iron Eyes, our newest staff attorney, Dov Korff-Korn, and social media mavens, Nadia Brewer and Jesse Grey Eagle.
The History & Future of Native Activism
On Thursday, April 20, Lakota Law Standing Rock Organizer Phyllis Young and Co-Director Chase Iron Eyes shared personal insights into their experiences as activists, gave the inside scoop on Lakota Law’s current campaigns, and looked together toward the future of Native America.
Getting to Know You — An Inner Circle Conversation
Protector, Wisdom, and Vision members joined us for “Getting to Know You” — our first interactive Inner Circle Conversation of the year, on Tuesday, February 28 from 4:00 - 5:15 p.m. PT. In this meet and greet member event, Chase Iron Eyes hosts as we get to know each other and Lakota Law’s two newest team members: Tokata Iron Eyes and Lailani Upham. It was a video-on and mics-on conversation around our journeys into activism and the path that lies ahead.

Second Annual Wopila Gathering
On Giving Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. MT, members — and all who wanted to participate— joined Lakota Law leaders Chase Iron Eyes, Madonna Thunder Hawk, Phyllis Young, and DeCora Hawk for conversations on three topics critical to Lakota Country and across Turtle Island. It was a wonderful event, and we thank all who participated and generously supported!
Getting Out the Native Vote: A Membership Circle Event
On Tuesday, Oct. 11, we hosted a special members-only event: Getting out the Native Vote! All circles of membership had the opportunity to get the inside scoop about this year's on-the-ground Native vote campaign — Oceti Vote. Co-director Chase Iron Eyes, athletic events coordinator and marketing specialist Shaun Little Horn, and campaign producer DeCora Hawk discussed Lakota Law's strategy to register Native voters in South Dakota and in key states around the nation.
Inspiration in Action
Our Inspiration in Action event took place on Thursday, June 23. Lakota Law co-director and lead counsel Chase Iron Eyes, Cheyenne River Organizer Madonna Thunder Hawk, and Social Media and Marketing Specialist Shaun Little Horn shared their stories.
ICWA & Voting Rights: An Inner Circle Conversation
Lakota Law members joined us for “ICWA & Voting Rights” — our first interactive Inner Circle Conversation of the year on Zoom, Thursday, April 28 from 2 - 3:30 p.m. PDT. Lakota Law leaders and your fellow, committed allies in the Protector, Wisdom, and Vision membership circles had an intimate discussion about these critical topics.
After introductions, we broke out into focused discussion rooms. ICWA (the Indian Child Welfare Act) was discussed with Cheyenne River organizer Madonna Thunder Hawk, Lakota Law President Daniel Sheehan, and Executive Director Sara Nelson. In the other room, Lakota Law Co-Directors Chase Iron Eyes and Daniel Paul Nelson, along with Field Organizer DeCora Hawk, dove deep on the topic of Native voting.

2022 Roadmap: A Membership Circle Event
On Tuesday, March 8, we hosted Lakota Law’s first membership event of 2022! Folks from all Lakota Law membership circles gathered on Zoom to hear our co-director and lead counsel, Chase Iron Eyes, Cheyenne River Organizer Madonna Thunder Hawk, and our newest team member, Madonna's granddaughter Decora Hawk, recap the impact you helped create in 2021 and discuss our vision for this year. Great things are in the works, and we look forward to seeing you at the next event to report back!
Inside the Line 3 Movement: A Membership Circle Event
Thursday, September 9 from 3-4 p.m. PDT
On Thursday, September 9, we took an inside look at the Line 3 pipeline resistance. Members from all circles of Lakota Law gathered on Zoom to hear firsthand accounts of water protectors involved in direct action with Camp Migizi in Minnesota. Lakota Law co-director Chase Iron Eyes and videographer Witko Clifford provided insights about their experiences battling the construction of Enbridge’s tar sands pipeline. Sarah Rose Harper, Lakota Law’s online community manager, outlined the role social media plays in activist movements and shared the best ways you can help support these efforts online. The event was moderated by co-director Dan Nelson, who was arrested at Line 3 in July.
June's Inner Circle Conversation
On Wednesday, June 30, Lakota Law leaders and other Protector, Wisdom, and Vision Circle members met face-to-face on Zoom for our second interactive Inner Circle Conversation.
After hearing Lakota Country video updates from Phyllis Young and Hoksila White Mountain, we broke out into discussion rooms with various Lakota Law leaders.
Leading the conversations were Madonna Thunder Hawk, Chase Iron Eyes, Daniel Sheehan, and Sara Nelson. Together we explored several issues that are central to Lakota Law’s mission, including the timely topics of pipelines (Dakota Access, Line 3, and the end of KXL), youth services (the teen center and kinship home), and voting rights.
Protecting Standing Rock’s Children: A Membership Circle Event
We came together on Zoom on Friday, May 7 with Standing Rock organizer Phyllis Young and McLaughlin, SD city councilmember Hoksila White Mountain for an all-circles virtual member event! We heard updates about Lakota Law’s kinship care home on Standing Rock and our forthcoming teen center that will provide safe and culturally enriching activities for youth. Two of Standing Rock’s respected leaders detailed how your support provides these essential services.
Updates from Indian Country: A Membership Circle Event
Thursday, February 25 from 3-4 p.m. PST
We welcomed all members to come together on Zoom as our Lakota Law leaders, Madonna Thunder Hawk and Chase Iron Eyes, brought us up to date on organizing efforts in the Dakotas. Madonna and Chase talked DAPL, COVID, #Landback, and more. We also heard from Melanie Thompson, an all-start Standing Rock phone bank caller who shared her experience getting out the vote for the 2020 and Georgia runoff elections.
